According to the Gaogong Industry Research Institute (GGII), China’s power battery installed capacity in the first half of 2019 involved a staggering 204 different single-cell specifications. Among these, all square batteries were sourced from CATL, primarily for the standard-range versions of Model 3 and Model Y. CATL supplied not only Tesla’s Shanghai factory but also its US facility. Cylindrical batteries, on the other hand, came from Panasonic and LG, powering long-range and high-end models.

Since the introduction of 4680 batteries in 2023, Tesla has reshaped its battery supply chain, reducing reliance on external suppliers, including those from China.

Why is Tesla using LiFePO4 batteries?
